Week of Reflection
Posted: 10th February 2009
We could have been playing the Indian Masters this week, but the tournament, like many others in these difficult times, became a victim of the global financial meltdown.
I was really looking forward to the tournament, which put India firmly on the golfing map when it was held for the first time last year. That was the first European Tour event in my country, and with the Johnnie Walker Classic two weeks later, it was a golfing fiesta for the fans.
I can understand the decision taken by 'Golf in Dubai', the promoters of the tournament, who also happen to be my personal sponsors. All I can say is that they have promised an even bigger, even better event next year. Hopefully the market conditions will have improved by then.
Given how the prize money has increased over the years, and the outstanding support we have got from the corporates, we professional golfers should consider ourselves lucky. I think now is the time for us to give back more to the organisers and sponsors. Even if the top-50 ranked players in the world decided to play two extra tournaments this year, that would be a great start. Last year, when the Indian Masters was launched, 'Golf in Dubai' was hoping that an Indian golfer would lift the trophy on Sunday. The perfect script was enacted when SSP Chowrasia beat a quality field, and he is the best example why tournaments such as the Indian Masters are required in developing sporting nations.
So, we had a forced break for a week and the Race to Dubai resumes in Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian Open - a great tournament with history which is played on a demanding golf course. The Palm Course at the Saujana has one of the trickiest green complexes on the European Tour, and the rough can be quite intimidating. I am not playing the tournament as I am off to the United States next week and going to KL for just one week and the travel thereafter would have been too taxing.
I have a long stretch in the US, which will include two World Golf Championship events and three PGA Tour tournaments leading up to the Masters. This is important not only for my Race to Dubai ambitions, but also for securing my PGA Tour card for the next year. I have had a nice rest this week and have just started practicing again. However, I had my yoga instructor with me during this time, and he taught me several new techniques which should help me become better. I am quite excited about this...let's see how it benefits my game.
