Well Done Gaganjeet!

Posted: 4th April 2009

Fantastic is the word that best describes what Gaganjeet Bhullar has done by winning the International Final Qualifying - Asia on Wednesday in Sentosa. It makes me proud to see such a talented youngster from India do so well.

Singapore and Sentosa must now rank as one of the favourite places for Indian golfer. For it was at Sentosa that I won the Singapore Open last November and now young Bhullar has achieved success at the same venue and made it to the British Open.

I have spoken to the young man and I look forward to welcoming him to the British Open. It is indeed a pleasure to see someone so young play so well.

I must admit that at his age, none of us - Jyoti or Arjun or myself - were as good as he is at 20 - he turns 21 later this month. He has the right credentials to make it big.

As an amateur he achieved great success - I am told he once won five events on the trot - and then won a silver medal with the Indian team at the Asian Games in 2006. Interestingly, his silver medal came days before I took the Asian Tour Order of Merit that year.

Now in just over two years on Asian Tour he has made a big name. I have been following his game and results for a while. He has the knack of bringing in excellent rounds when he needs them. He got his Asian Tour card with a superb final round of 64 in the last full field event at Cambodia and he made it to the Volvo Masters in Bangkok, where I met him in December.

Now with three top-10s, including a 21-under for second place in SAIL Open just 10 days ago, he has booked his ticket to British Open at Turnberry. This is the beginning of the next level of learning for Gaganjeet. European conditions can be demanding and when you play consistently on varying conditions, you become a better golfer.

He has the right ingredients - besides having a big physique he is a long hitter and most of all willing to learn at all times. With a good short game he will be a tough guy to beat on any circuit.

I wish him all the best for the rest of the year and I am waiting to see him tee up at the British Open. It will be good to have such a phenomenal talent from India for company at the oldest of all Majors.

Meanwhile, I have one more event - the Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas before we move onto the year's first Major, the Masters, which I have said many times before is my favourite Major. This will be third successive appearance and I am looking forward to it.

And yes, the blog must conclude with a mention of the one and only Tiger Woods. He is bac ! And how. He scored a brilliant win at the Arnold Palmer invitational. After sitting out eight months, Tiger took just three outings to notch his first win and it was emphatic one and in typical Tiger-style. So watch out for him at Augusta.

As for me, I was 24th - it should have been better, but the putting was a bit off.  But nevertheless I am feeling good and playing well and I am look forward to the next couple of weeks.

Happy golfing till next time.
