Onwards And Upwards

I was extremely disappointed at the way I blew a great chance of adding a fourth European Tour title to my CV. The European Open was there for the taking. I went into the final day tied for the lead three strokes ahead of the rest of the field. But absolutely nothing happened for me on the final day.

It's easier to accept a loss when you play well, but someone else plays out of his socks and knocks you off. That's not to imply Christian Cevaer played badly - actually he did a fantastic job of tackling what was a tough course - but still...he shot a two-over and won, while I played four-over.

What was most disappointing on the final day was how tentative I was with my putting. I missed at least four short putts during the four days, which made the final difference. But having said that, I was satisfied with the way my short game shaped up. It was a markedly improved performance compared to the last few tournaments.

The best thing about last week...is that it was the last week. It's gone now. I have to take the positives from what was a good effort. As I said, my short game seems to be back and I was quite happy with the fact that I played the last three holes of the London Club course one-under par.

Those last three holes were brutal. After benign conditions on the opening day, the wind picked up and bogey could have been a par score for those holes. I think apart from me, only Christian was not over-par for the closing stretch.

In the end, I was really happy for Christian. He had been struggling for some time and is actually a much better player than what his results have been showing. Also, he is expecting a baby in the next few weeks and is planning to curtail his schedule to be with his wife. I am glad he will now be tension-free as he takes the break.

We are off to Celtic Manor in Wales for this week's tournament. The 2010 course at the Celtic Manor resort is the host venue of the 2010 Ryder Cup, and there is great excitement this year. Both the captains - Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin - are in the field.

I love the course and did quite well here last year. I think I was third going into the final day and a couple of bogeys on the back nine on Sunday pushed me to tied 10th place. Of course, Scott Strange was on fire and the only way I could have caught him was if I broke 60.

I am looking forward to the week, which will also be my final competitive round before the US Open. A good finish would definitely give me the required momentum to do well at Bethpage Black. Let's see how it goes.
